Slauson Ave. & Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA
In response to the current housing crisis in Los Angeles, this project provides an affordable housing option for previously homeless veterans. In addition to the social services available for the residents, the entire project is pet-friendly, where each space is accessible for pets, because I strongly believe that pets can bring positive influences to the residents.
By program, the project can be divided into three layers. The ground consists of the more public programs (cafe, gallery, social services, vet, etc.) which are accessible to the public and the residents. The plinth level, only accessible to the residents, serves as a “pet park” where the residents could participate in many activities with their pets. The housing units, ten pre-fabricated modules (see p.9), then sits atop the plinth level, each carefully oriented and positioned to allow for privacy, ample lighting and airflow.
Overall, this project serves as a safe-haven for the residents, where they can feel safe and comfortable while having plenty of chance to engage with its community. The public programs on the ground floor also allows for further dialogue with its greater neighborhood and city fabric.
