The architecture breaks down the boundaries between humans, technology and nature. Programmatically and spatially, the design stratifies tourists, students and researchers into distinct layers; however, the overall campus appears unified and the extremes dissolved. The form is reminiscent of the fantastical canyons of the American West. At one end of the campus shines solar tower, a beacon for technology. At the other, the architecture dissolves into a xeriscaped garden providing a transition into the desert. The built environment rises from the ground like buried monuments; the form akin to cut stone. Multiple bridges, paths, and stairs form a web of circulation binding and connecting the programs together. Within the canyons, open plazas dot the site promoting collaboration and interaction amongst all members of the campus. The laboratory is no longer just a space for research, but begins to dissolve the boundaries of theoretical and practical; scientific breakthrough and society. Humans are able to innovate, technology is able to grow, nature remains prevalent, and society is advanced within this desert campus.
